Schinus molle L. Nomi volgari. Falso pepe, Pepe molle, Schino, Lentisco del Perú. Fiorisce in estate. I frutti contengono materie resinose, tannino, glucosio ed un'essenza di odore e sapore di pepe. I frutti hanno proprietà diuretiche, stomatiche, toniche e sono impiegati contro le affezioni bronchiali e delle vie urinarie. La corteccia e le foglie sono diuretiche e si usano anche all'esterno contro piaghe ed ulceri. La gommo-resina è purgativa, antigottosa.

I valori ambientali della risorsa sono:

• paesaggistici, copertura vegetale e conformazione morfologica;
• geologici, costone calcarenitico in direzione nord-est/sud-ovest culminante nel rilievo "Schino della Croce" (1013 s.l.m.);
• botanici, essenze di impianto artificiale: pino, eucalipto, frassino, roverella, pero selvatico, calicotome ecc., occorre evidenziare che tutta l'area è oggetto di una graduale sostituzione delle essenze di impianto artificiale con roverella da rinnovazione naturale;
• faunistici, fauna comune;
• antropici, costruzioni ristrutturata, adibita a rifugio per il personale forestale, gruppi scouts e per gli escursionisti.

La fruizione turistica è consentita, limitata però a 50 visitatori, sotto il controllo dell'IRF di Enna. I servizi di fruizione turistica sono la visita guidata, un'area attrezzata con una capacità ricettiva di 100 persone (località omonima) ed i rifugi. I servizi accessori sono i servizi igienici e l'area parcheggio per le auto e per i pullman. Solo a piedi si possono percorrere i sentieri. Non vi è possibilità di fare campeggio libero; i pullman possono percorrere le strade di accesso all'area.

Introduction

One of the most noteworthy features of this calendar is the number of repetitions. The majority of these may be explained in two ways. One group of repetitions results from the misreading of the correct dates of the relevant feasts at some point in the tradition at Naples. This explains why saints Metrophanes (4 Jan. & 4 June), Epiphanius (5 Jan. & 5 June), Cyril of Alexandria (7 June & 7 July), Irenaeus (27 Apr. & 27 Jun.), and Thecla (22 Feb. & 22 Aug.) are each commemorated on two dates. However, the second and far larger group of repetitions results from the combination of Greek and Latin sources in the composition of this calendar. Hence Ss. Adrianus and Natalia (2 Mar. & 26 Aug.), Ambrose (3 Nov. & 7 Dec.), Christopher (7 May & 24 July), Chrysanthus and Daria, Cosmas and Damian (27 Sept. & 22 Oct.), Eleutherius (18 Apr. & 15 Dec.), Gervasius and Protasius (19 July & 14 Oct.), Ignatius (27 Jan., 19 Oct., 18 Dec, 20 Dec.), John the Evangelist (26 Sept. & 27 Dec.), the apostle Jude (26 May & 1 July), Mark the Evangelist (25 Apr. & 17 May), the apostle Matthaeus (6 May & 16 Nov.), the apostle Philip (1 May & 14 Nov.), Silvester (2 Jan. & 31 Dec.), Thecla (22 Feb. & 24 Sept.), and Thomas (3 July, 18 Sept., 21 Dec.) are all celebrated both on the traditional Greek dates of their feasts and on the traditional Latin dates also. A small group of repetitions remain more difficult to classify.

"So?"

The rascal refused to admit that he was impressed, but I could see that I’d shocked him. He never expected me to talk back. Suddenly I felt brave. I started thinking of all the evil things I could do with his last name, Schino, but I put those thoughts aside for another day. I had something much more important to do on that day.

Posta di fronte ad un limpido mare, ai piedi di fertili colline, proprio di fronte alle isole Eolie, la cittadina di Gioiosa Marea può considerarsi una tra i poli turistici più importanti della Sicilia. Con i suoi chilometri di spiaggia interamente balneabile, bagnata da un mare incontaminato, di un blu quasi irreale, con una vegetazione di mille tonalità di verde, molto curata, rappresenta una meta sicura per chi ama il mare o per chi cerca tranquillità e solitudine; per chi vorrà "bruciare" i giorni o per chi invece all’ospitalità degli uomini ama associare quella naturale dei luoghi, del paesaggio, dei colori e di un’architettura semplice ed aristocratica.

Gioiosa Marea è nata nel 1750 dallo smembramento di Gioiosa Guardia, un insediamento alto-collinare. Le sue origini risalgono al 1094 quando il conte Ruggero donò, in qualità di possesso feudale, al Monastero dei Benedettini di Patti, una tenuta denominata "Meliuso". Nel 1361, dopo che l’Abbazia di Patti venne elevata a Vescovato, Vinciguerra d’Aragona ottenne a vita, grazie alla sua fedeltà al re, la Capitania di Patti e nel 1366 fondò il centro sulla sommità del monte Meliuso. L’antica Gioiosa Guardia era divisa in quattro quartieri cresciuti attorno alle rispettive chiese, da cui prendevano il nome: S. Giovanni Battista, S.Nicolò, S. Maria della Catena, S.Maria delle Grazie. Nella seconda metà del secolo XVIII l’antico borgo, per varie motivazioni, venne abbandonato dagli abitanti che si trasferirono sulla costa.

6. Let us now look at the things you find fault with in the story itself. And here let us begin with what would probably make any one averse to receiving the history: I mean the play of words between prinos and prisis, schinos and schisis. You say that you can see how this can be in Greek, but that in Hebrew the words are altogether distinct. On this point, however, I am still in doubt; because, when I was considering this passage (for I myself saw this difficulty), I consulted not a few Jews about it, asking them the Hebrew words for prinos and prisein, and how they would translate schinos the tree, and how schisis. And they said that they did not know these Greek words prinos and schinos, and asked me to show them the trees, that they might see what they called them. And I at once (for the truth's dear sake) put before them pieces of the different trees. One of them then said, that he could not with any certainty give the Hebrew name of anything not mentioned in Scripture, since, if one was at a loss, he was prone to use the Syriac word instead of the Hebrew one; and he went on to say, that some words the very wisest could not translate. "If, then," said he, "you can adduce a passage in any Scripture where the schinos is mentioned, or the prinos, you will find there the words you seek, together with the words which have the same sound; but if it is nowhere mentioned, we also do not know it."

This, then, being what the Hebrews said to whom I had recourse, and who were acquainted with the history, I am cautious of affirming whether or not there is any correspondence to this play of words in the Hebrew. Your reason for affirming that there is not, you yourself probably know.

11. Your other objections are stated, as it appears to me, somewhat irreverently, and without the becoming spirit of piety. I cannot do better than quote your very words: "Then, after crying out in this extraordinary fashion, he detects them in a way no less incredible, which not even Philistion the play-writer would have resorted to. For, not satisfied with rebuking them through the Spirit, he placed them apart, and asked them severally where they saw her committing adultery; and when the one said, 'Under a holm-tree' (prinos) he answered that the angel would saw him under (prisein); and in a similar fashion threatened the other, who said, 'Under a mastich-tree' (schinos), with being rent asunder."

I had nearly forgotten an additional remark I have to make about the prino-prisein and schino-schiesein difficulty; that is, that in our Scriptures there are many etymological fancies, so to call them, which in the Hebrew are perfectly suitable, but not in the Greek. It need not surprise us, then, if the translators of the History of Susanna contrived it so that they found out some Greek words, derived from the same root, which either corresponded exactly to the Hebrew form (though this I hardly think possible), or presented some analogy to it. Here is an instance of this in our Scripture. When the woman was made by God from the rib of the man, Adam says, "She shall be called woman, because she was taken out of her husband." Now the Jews say that the woman was called "Essa," and that "taken" is a translation of this word as is evident from "chos isouoth essa," which means, "I have taken the cup of salvation;" and that "is" means "man," as we see from "Hesre ais," which is, "Blessed is the man." According to the Jews, then, "is" is "man," and "essa" "woman," because she was taken out of her husband. It need not then surprise us if some interpreters of the Hebrew "Susanna," which had been concealed among them at a very remote date, and had been preserved only by the more learned and honest, should have either given the Hebrew word for word, or hit upon some analogy to the Hebrew forms, that the Greeks might be able to follow them. For in many other passages we can, I find traces of this kind of contrivance on the part of the translators, which I noticed when I was collating the various editions.
